Holly McDonald has been appointed as University Registrar. Holly's relationship with UAF began over 25 years ago as a student. After working as a student employee and finishing her bachelor's degree at UAF, she began working at the Center for Distance Education, now eCampus, in 2001.

Residential heater program could help FNSB improve air quality

The ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ Center for Energy and Power is conducting an electric thermal storage heater field study that will take place over three years in North Pole, ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥. The goal of the study is to learn whether electric thermal storage heaters, a type of supplementary heating appliance, can help reduce home heating costs and improve air quality, especially PM2.5.

Nanook Recreation is offering a variety of fitness classes for fall semester 2022. We will offer some familiar programs such as strength training, Olympic weightlifting, mat pilates, yoga, outdoor bootcamp and adult speed training. We will also be expanding into other new areas such as CrossFit later in the semester.

Friday Focus: How a chief of staff can help you

Earlier this week the university announced that my working title would change from ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ executive officer to chief of staff (CoS). This shift has no impact on my role, duties, or direct reports at UAF, but it does make it easier for stakeholders inside and outside the organization to understand what my position does for our UAF community. With the opportunity to write this week's Friday Focus, I want to expand on this shift and provide the campus community with a look inside my role. If stakeholders don't understand what my position does for the university then they may miss an opportunity to benefit from the services I can provide them.

UAF recently submitted our annual operating and capital budget request for FY24 to President Pitney. The President will weigh our needs alongside those of UAA, UAS, the system office, and what she feels is an appropriate request to the governor. UAF is requesting an operating budget increase to support employee compensation increases (to be determined at a UA level), fixed cost increases, and strategic academic, outreach and research initiatives that align with UA’s Goals and Measures and UAF’s Strategic Plan.

Experiential Education: UAF leaders go to Nome

Each July, UAF's Northwest Campus partners with the local school district in Nome to offer a unique and transformative experience to incoming K-12 teachers. The course, ED 420 ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ Native Education, provides a continuing education opportunity for teachers to learn about the history of education in ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ as it pertains to Indigenous peoples. For over ten years, this enriching experience has provided dozens of new teachers valuable insight into the knowledge and ways of life that have, and continue to, sustain the first peoples of the Bering Straits region.
